Leading Through Growth: Florian Emaury on Menhir Photonics’ Strategic Vision and customer relationships

As Menhir Photonics continues its trajectory from precision laser manufacturer to global industry leader, CEO and Co-Founder Florian Emaury reflects on the complementary strengths driving the company forward and the three-phase product strategy designed to scale ultrafast laser production and production volume to hundreds of thousands of units per year.

A Complementary Leadership Team

When people evaluate Menhir Photonics, Florian emphasizes that they look at more than just technology. “We have an amazing, diverse, and complementary management team supported by a dedicated and very talented team,” he explains. The leadership quartet brings distinct expertise: Benjamin Rudin provides deep-tech engineering vision, having conceived and worked on the core technology over the last two decades; Dario Leumann oversees operational strategy and scaling; Anna Pogrebna ensures financial discipline while translating technical achievements into compelling business narratives; and Florian Emaury himself serves as the “technical sales, customers contact and strategic partner.”

“I can understand the customers and their applications,” Florian says, describing his role as a unique combination of deep laser understanding, application knowledge, and customer relationship management. “My main role in the company is to be close to customers while designing the product portfolio roadmap.” This positioning allows Florian to sense market direction, close deals, and align product development with genuine customer needs, while knowing the development potential at Menhir Photonics. “While working with research customers is key to developing deep technical features of our lasers, our industrial customers are pushing us into turning the same products into a reliable system. The physics of the laser stay the same in both cases, while requirements and usage conditions are different. Joggling with these trade-offs and deciding of the right internal developments is one of my key roles, while aligning with our strategy and resources”, Florian explains.

The Three-Layer Strategy: A Roadmap to Scale

Menhir Photonics operates on a deliberate three-layer approach, prioritizing market development, and customer integration over the typical “burn-cash-and-scale” venture capital playbook:

  • Layer One (Research & Pilot projects): Establishing our footprint by delivering high-quality lab-grade, customizable systems to research institutions, national laboratories, or R&D teams from large companies worldwide. This allows our partners to develop high-end applications. Our lab-version and the 19″ rack mountable version with advanced features are specifically designed for this purpose: enabling our customers to operate our lasers efficiently and easily validate their application and requirements in a cost-effective manner, while allowing fast development cycles if needed.
  • Layer Two (Production Run): Introducing industrial-grade products designed for operation in harsh environments beyond controlled laboratories (e.g. data center with 10-50degC). Using Design for Manufacturing practices enables production runs of 100–500 units annually. These OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) versions are produced by our talented production engineers achieving > 3-sigma quality standards.
  • Layer Three (Full Automation and scale-up): The transition to robotic assembly. This will allow us to scale to tens of thousands of units annually, delivering telecom-grade quality at a cost-disruptive volume, making Menhir Photonics the biggest ultrafast laser company in the world by volume.

“It is not only about developing a product,” Florian emphasizes. “It is about developing your know-how and your market through delivery. Your customers need to trust their application with you in order to enable their application and growth.”

Building Relationships, Not Just Products

At the heart of Menhir Photonics’s strategy lies Florian’s genuine passion for the applications his lasers enable. He accompanies customers on their journeys over a large timespan to discuss strategy and tackle challenges, not as a branded customer service promise, but as a reflection of his authentic commitment to solving problems and supporting Menhir Photonics customers in the usage of our lasers. “Our lasers have been designed to be turn-key and easy to use. The applications of customers rely nevertheless on complicated physics and schemes. This is also Menhir Photonics’ distinctive strength to stay close to our customers and help them in using our lasers by sharing public knowledge and tricks that we have developed over the years,” Florian acknowledges.

This is not just transactional relationship building. Florian knows people deeply. He remembers what they do, understands their needs, and treats everyone with meticulous attention to detail to support them. Whether or not a connection benefits Menhir Photonics today, creating diverse relationships across the globe is just part of who he is. It flows from his core value of collaboration and what we offer at Menhir Photonics.

What sets Florian apart is his absolute belief in what Menhir Photonics can achieve. He refuses to accept that something is impossible. When he believes in a vision, he inspires the entire team to pursue it with determination and driving process until the vision becomes reality. Far from blind optimism, this is grounded in deep technical understanding and years of customer relationships. When Florian commits a goal, he has typically already envisioned the path forward and the steps needed to bring the vision to life.

Rather than operating in stealth mode, Menhir Photonics actively promotes its capabilities and vision. “We have such a talented team and advanced technology that I prefer to shout really loud and attract those who share our ambition to turn bold ideas into reality.”

The Technical Founder Advantage

Florian believes his technical background provides unique advantages to Menhir Photonics’s current scale. “In technical fields, a founder can be a super good organizer and finance person, but at the size of 20–50 people, it is important to have a really close connection between the customer, the product roadmap, and the needs of the market.” This integrated approach, where technical understanding, customer relationships, and strategic planning converge in leadership, enables rapid decision-making and coherent direction.

Looking Forward

As Menhir Photonics moves through its strategic phases, the company remains focused on building not just production capacity but lasting partnerships. “Menhir Photonics is not only about the quality of our products, but also about our customer relationships and their journey,” Florian emphasizes.

With a clear roadmap from artisanal precision to automated scale, a leadership team combining complementary expertise, and a CEO who bridges technical excellence with strategic vision and authentic passion, Menhir Photonics is positioning itself to become the volume leader in ultrafast laser technology.
